Assistant Coordinator, Special Services

Queens Library/Special Services and Job Information Center

Manages Queens Library/ Special Services unit which serves persons with disabilities, in correctional facilities, older adults, job seekers and medically underserved populations. Staff: Outreach librarians, Job Information librarian, Public Health specialists, Community Associate, Special Services Associate, hourly rates, volunteers.

Manages library aspects of Queens Library Health Link, a five-year federally funded unique initiative in partnership with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, American Cancer Society and Queens Cancer Center.

  • supervise and train full-time library staff, Health Link Specialists
  • oversees mammography van visits to libraries and selected community locations, educational programs, development of community groups: Cancer Action Councils
  • coordinate systemwide trainings for participating libraries
  • coordinate development of resources to promote the project in community libraries, web site, etc.

*Oversees development of projects to better serve senior centers, e.g. Book Club kit, Memoir Writing Kit, Intergenerational Projects, Genealogy Workshops, and various publications integrated to the library's collections.

*Oversees establishment of the first HEAL pilot project in the nation with ReServe and Libraries for the Future.

*Coordinates training for systemwide staff about Special Services componenets and others such as "Serving the Spanish Speaking Community," a systemwide workshop geared to public service staff of all levels working at libraries with Spanish-speaking customers.

*Developed a brochure in Spanish about library services and how to use the library.

*Coordinated installation of a video relay service for the deaf at locations serving a large deaf population.

Spanish Language Collections/Cultural Arts Manager

Queens Library/New Americans Program

Selected, purchased, evaluated and maintained Spanish language collections.
Oversaw NAP Spanish language collections budget.
Co-established Spanish collections ‘Say Si’ Committee.
Coordinated evaluation of 23 Spanish language collections.
Served as a resource for the library in a consultative and collaborative capacity on the acquisition of e-books, data bases, and encyclopedias in Spanish.
Developed NAP Spanish language promotional materials for public use such as bibliographies, book lists, and specialized supplements.
Translated into Spanish and revised translations of library informational materials.
Contributed to the mantenance of Queens Library Website Spanish interface.
Selected and Updated content of Bienvenidos a Queens data base.


Planned cultural arts programs in languages representing ethnic groups in Queens.
Coordinated contracts, payment, and equipment request for cultural arts programs.
Oversaw NAP cultural arts budget and special grants as assigned.
Collaborated on the successful application for a New York State Council on the Arts [NYSCA] grant to present a Latino Authors Series.
Initiated and maintained contact with multi ethnic community and arts organizations in Queens and New York metropolitan area.
